Jean-Baptiste, Edger

About the Artist

Edger Jean-Baptiste

1917-1992

Born in Bainet, west of Jacmel. He was a cobbler and tailor, but he also painted village scenes and characters on rocks from the Bay of Bainet shoreline.

He was introduced to Le Centre D’Art in 1954 by Micius Stephane.

He was known as the “Master of Twilight” for his exploration of the effects of the shifting sun on the color of the sky, clouds, and landscape. In the late 1980’s he was forced to stop painting due to the onset of glaucoma and eventual loss of his vision.

His works are included in the permanent collections of the Musee d’Art du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince and the Yale University Art Gallery.

He was also the legendary Jonathan Damme’s favorite artist.

He did not paint a large body of works, which has made the paintings he did paint more valuable.
