Some say the Citadel is the 8th Wonder of the World. It is the largest mountainous fort in the western
hemisphere. Like a grim cyclops, the Citadel dominates land, sea and sky – situated at an altitude of
more than 3,000 feet atop the peak called Bonnet-a-l’Eveque (Bishops Bonnet). Conceived by Christophe,
in 1804 and as an impregnable stronghold against possible attacks by Napoleon to reconquer Haiti. The
citadel continues to serve as a symbol of Haitian independence. This mighty fort is 17 miles from
Cap Haitian.

Over the same mountain trail that my family used to visit the Citadel in 1976 an army of former slaves
drug masonry, 365 weighty bronze cannons, and a huge supply of cannon balls up this winding trail to build
and arm this masterpiece of architecture and engineering. At the beginning of the trail there was much excitement,
there were locals selling drinks, touristy things, and Haitian art of all kinds. The thing I noticed the most,
was that the people were respectful and seemed to be happy despite their turbulent history. We rode up the trail
on donkeys one by one in the tropical heat. I remember being terribly thirsty when a boy carrying a bucket of
cold Coca Colas on his head came to my aid. That Coca Cola was the best thing I had ever tasted. It was made with
pure Haitian cane sugar — What a delight. Once we arrived at the Citadel, it was like we had the entire fort to
ourselves. There were no tour guides or gift shops. Then the atlantic breeze cooled us off as we explored on our own.
Feeling the power of this fort beneath your feet is unforgettable. It was an easy ride down and a wonderful day trip.
